Women + Sport around the Globe

Albania

Women in Albania face challenges when it comes to gender equality due to the country’s strong inter-generational patriarchal system. However, through legislation beginning in the late 1990s, the Albanian government is working to ensure gender equality and empowerment of women in the country’s political, economic, social, and civic domains.

The Albanian Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth have implemented affirmative action and gender mainstreaming strategies in an effort to promote gender equality in sport. Football, basketball, and volleyball are the most popular sports for women and girls in Albania. The national women’s football team was formed in 2011 and ranked 59th in the FIFA World Ranking in 2013.
