Soe Soe Myar

Burma / Myanmar

Born and raised in Myanmar (formerly Burma), Soe Soe Myar developed a passion for taekwondo at the age of 11. She would eventually go on to win several international medals, including gold at the World Juniors Championships, the Asian Taekwondo Tournament, and the Southeast Asian Games. During her time as an athlete, she used her platform to develop sports programs for rural youth and seniors. Because of her efforts, she received the 2007 Woman of the Year Award from the Myanmar Sports Writer Association for her work as a volunteer encouraging sports participation.

Soe Soe is now the Director of Sport and Physical Education for Myanmar’s Ministry of Health and Sports. She also works with roughly 300 youth in weekly taekwondo training sessions in rural communities, and has coached athletes who have competed and won medals for Myanmar at the international level. Soe Soe’s immersive role in the world of taekwondo earned her a place as a technical official at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Moreover, she’s currently serving as a Co-Principal Investigator of a research project engaging in situational analysis of sports competition, participation rates, and available resources in Myanmar.
